Are The Tories Just The Usual Suspects?
Is Gabriel Byrne going to play David "Call Me Dave" Cameron in the policy-lite Tory politician's life story?Well, that is what sprung to mind following Cameron's speech to Tory Party Conference (after the pending doom and gloom of a possible return to 1980s Thatcherite politics jumped up and down on my brain repeatedly, that is).
Cameron described himself as: "The man with the plan."
I am sure that anyone who has seen the film The Usual Suspects will recall that Gabriel Byrne plays a character called Dean Keaton who is repeatedly referred to as "the man with the plan".
Does that make George Osborne Verbal Kint? The "gimp" who hangs about Keaton hanging on his every word? (But who in the end turns out to be an evil mastermind stabbing people in the back and killing off all his rivals?) No, probably not, but perhaps Cameron should watch out for Osborne lurking in the background, just in case?
Cameron might be the man with the Thatcherite plan, but the Tories' 80s style announcements today definitely make them look like the Usual Suspects.
