Kerron Wins at UK PFC Awards Dinner
Last night the UK Parliamentary Football Club held its inaugural awards dinner at the very plush (i.e. well out of my price range) Cinnamon Club.Although the 2006 side holds the record of having the best results ever for the club, this year saw the win of the interparliamentary cup over the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish Parliaments/Assemblies; the World Fairs Cup; and yesterday another trophy was added as the MPs won the Portcullis Cup over at Waterloo against teams from Virgin Media, Supporters Direct and the FA - Greg Dyke handing over the trophy.
I was delighted to win the award (pictured left) last night for Save/s of the Season. It was meant to be a "Save of the Season" award but apparently there were so many to choose from from my back catalogue this year they pluralised the trophy!
If I had to pick one out myself (which my bulging ego will just about allow me to do), I'd pick the triple save against the Press Lobby down at Party Conference whilst carrying injuries fron the two matches I had played in the day before (including one that we won after extra time and penalties!).
Still not a patch on that wonder save at Stamford Bridge from June 2006 though. :-)
Of the other awards given on the night, I was a bit disappointed that my being hospitalised by a Ugandan MP didn't secure me the "Diplomatic Incident of the Season" award - but I was pipped by an MP (who shall remain nameless for his own good) who unwittingly managed to take the whole team out to a Ghanaian village in the middle of nowhere for a consecration ceremony for a new building project, that for some reason had never materialised.
Player of the Season went to Mark Covell, the midfield dynamo who's lung-bursting runs saw him travelling down from Leeds to play in every single match (though I should point out that Mark didn't run all the way to London from Leeds every other week as that really would have been lung-bursting!).
John Leech combined winning the Golden Boot as the club's top scorer with an award for Miss of the Season - plenty of those for us to choose from, but apparently the piece de resistance was an open goal miss when 2-1 down in Ghana with a shot that ended up nearer the Ivory Coast!
Clive Betts MP won the Chairman's Award for his contribution organising and managing the side alongside super Lawrie McMenemy, as well as performing heroics in the heart of the UK PFC defence all season.
Young Player of the Year rather ironically went to Alan Keen MP, 70 years old and still going strong!
Other awards that weren't given out but should have been:
+ Comedy Injury of the Season - me breaking my finger on a long range loopy effort.
+ UK PFC Referee Most Likely to be asked to officiate Beat the Stars if he isn't sending off football writers - Dermot Gallagher.
+ The John Prescott Award (i.e the player most likely to forget his kit and have to use a couple of rolled up Hansards as shinpads) - actually half the club could have won that one!
+ UK PFC Player Most Likely To Appear In A Best Looking Political Journos List - Andy Porter.
+ Most Inappropriate Use of Dancing Girls In A Game - Talksport.
+ Most Unusual Gerard Depardieu Impersonation - the ex-Hungarian international playing for UEFA in Holland.
+ UK PFC Biggest Use of Ringers - the Smillion Cup at Stamford Bridge (when we got stuffed).
+ Biggest Robbery - the Police securing a last minute 2-2 draw against the UK PFC after they had been similarly burgled the year before.
All in all a good awards night, but as nobody won a DVD about some historic battle or other, I am not sure how seriously we should take it. ;-)
