Chinglish - Modern Day Poetry?

Regular readers of this site will know how much I enjoy words, especially when others get the wrong and give inadvertant meanings to what they are saying.

Bring in another language altogether and you have massive potential to make even greater errors.

But in recent weeks I have stumbled on the glorious phenomenon that is "Chinglish" - a cross between English and Chinese that seems to have evolved into an artform of its own.

Whilst you still have occasions where people say something unintentionally rude - or just use phrases or words that can culturally cause amusement elsewhere (like seeing gaylord and wanko when you are out shopping), remember we do that quite well already with signs in this country for things like Thong, Cockington and Beaverlick. The difference with some Chinglish is that it has developed has a deeply poetic quality.

It's like a modern Haiku (if you'll forgive me mixing my Asian cultures for a second) - something which should be celebrated, if not encouraged.

However I read that in Beijing the Chinese Government are looking to eradicate as many of these errors on public signage and shop fronts because of the embarrassment they may cause when people arrive in the country for the Olympics.

Click here to read some examples. Personally I think the Chinglish should stay.

But what do you think? Is Chinglish good, bad or ugly, you decide.
