The Benn Dynasty Continues

I am sureone person who is hoping for a late election - just like me - is Labour's candidate in Worthing East & Shoreham, Emily Benn.

I know what you are thinking, and the answer is "yes", she is the granddaughter of Tony Benn - Old Labour stallwart supreme.

But she is 17 - so if Gordon were to call the election this week then electoral law would prevent her from standing. She's not 18 for another 2 weeks, so I guess she must be counting down the days to her 18th birthday for several reasons!

Of course at the last General Election you had to be 21 to run for Parliament. I had a friend running for the Lib Dems in 2005...OK,an acquaintance...and she was in the same boat. She was 20 when selected and was very grateful she had eventually turned 21 by the time the poll was called.

So good luck to Emily as she carries on the Benn dynasty - I hope she is as fortunate as my friend was.
